Fundamentals of Nursing Department

Overview

The Department of Fundamentals of Nursing, established in 1989, serves as the foundational pillar of the nursing curriculum at St. John’s College of Nursing. It plays a crucial role in shaping the early professional identity of nursing students by providing a comprehensive introduction to essential nursing knowledge, skills, and attitudes. The department offers a structured and supportive learning environment that promotes the development of professional competencies needed for safe, ethical, and effective clinical practice. It emphasizes the importance of understanding and addressing fundamental human needs while preparing students to navigate real-world healthcare settings with confidence and compassion.

At the heart of nursing practice, the department embodies the profession’s core values—being with, doing for, and authentically engaging with patients and their families. Through a curriculum rooted in patient-centred care, ethical responsibility, and evidence-based practice, the department cultivates both technical expertise and humanistic qualities such as empathy, communication, and accountability. It stands as the cornerstone upon which advanced nursing knowledge is built, ensuring that every student is well-prepared to deliver holistic, high-quality care across diverse clinical contexts.
