M.Sc. MLT Microbiology & Immunology

Allied Health Sciences education at St. John’s Medical College began in 1975 with the introduction of the Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (DMLT) programme, laying a strong foundation for structured laboratory training within the institution. The formal undergraduate programmes affiliated to the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) commenced with the launch of the Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Technology (BSc MLT) in 1999, with an annual student intake of 22.

Postgraduate education in Allied Health Sciences was subsequently strengthened with the introduction of MSc MLT programmes in the year 2007 in Microbiology, Haematology, and Biochemistry, with a current intake of 10 students in each specialty. These programmes reflect the institution’s enduring commitment to developing advanced laboratory professionals and nurturing future academic leaders in laboratory medicine.

The St. John’s Laboratory Services constitute a state-of-the-art diagnostic facility, equipped with modern instrumentation and advanced technologies. The services encompass a wide spectrum of investigations, including clinical biochemistry, haematology, histopathology, cytopathology, microbiology, serology, immunology, molecular diagnostics, and point-of-care testing. The laboratories are accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL), ensuring adherence to national and international standards of quality, accuracy, and safety. Since their inception, these departments have played a vital role in patient care, medical education, and research, contributing significantly to the training of competent laboratory professionals and healthcare personnel.

Students of the BSc and MSc MLT programme are trained within these state-of-the-art laboratories across all branches of laboratory medicine. They receive extensive hands-on exposure and are encouraged to “learn on the job” in a real clinical environment. All departments are staffed by experienced and nationally renowned faculty who are dedicated, approachable, and ever willing to teach, mentor, and guide students, ensuring a rich, rigorous, and supportive learning experience.
