B.Sc Respiratory care technology (RCT)

Ever since its inception in 2000, department of pulmonary medicine has been training postgraduate and superspeciality residents. Since 2022, the department has also been running a Sleep Fellowship Programme affiliated with the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS). Prior to the formal launch of the allied health programme in 2024, respiratory therapists and technologists were trained through structured observer programmes.

The department is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including comprehensive pulmonary function testing services and both basic and advanced interventional airway and pleural procedures. A well-equipped four-bedded sleep laboratory accredited by the Indian Board of Sleep Medicine conducts diagnostic and titration sleep studies. Inpatient services cater to the full spectrum of respiratory and sleep disorders, with dedicated isolation facilities for active pulmonary tuberculosis. The department also houses a six-bedded Respiratory Intensive Care Unit (RICU) providing advanced care for critically ill respiratory patients.

The students will rotate in all the clinical and laboratory services in the department with ample exposure to all complex respiratory disorders, critical care, pulmonary function testing (including cardiopulmonary exercise testing, Body plethysmography, DLCO and spirometry), basic and advanced airway procedures (Bronchoalveolar lavage, endobronchial biopsy, transbronchial lung biopsy, EBUS- TBNA, cryobiopsy) and sleep medicine (Level 1 polysomnography and titration studies). The clinical exposure is also enriched by rigorous academic sessions and regular formative assessment.

This allied health course (B. Sc Respiratory Care Technology) is affiliated to RGUHS.
