The Department of Radiation Oncology, located on the ground floor of the St. John’s Oncology Centre (St. John’s Medical College Hospital, closest access through Gate No. 2, Sarjapur Road), commenced its operations in January 2013. We offer expertise and facilities dedicated to providing high-quality and high-precision treatments.
The department is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, including a high-end Linear Accelerator (Elekta® Agility) and the Monaco treatment planning system (TPS) for external beam radiotherapy, both recently upgraded in the year 2023, along with a High Dose Rate (HDR) Brachytherapy unit from Eckert Zeigler® (HDR Multi source Brachytherapy unit).
Our department delivers a full spectrum of advanced radiotherapy, from 3DCRT and IMRT to high-precision IGRT and VMAT. We specialize in ultra-targeted treatments including SRS/SRT and SBRT, as well as complex, life-saving procedures such as Total Body Irradiation (TBI) for bone marrow transplants and Total Skin Electron Therapy (TSET) for cutaneous lymphomas.
The department has treated over 5,000 patients with external beam radiotherapy on the linear accelerator and conducted over 1,500 sessions of brachytherapy through December 2025.
Furthermore, we demonstrate our commitment to academic excellence by running the BSc Radiotherapy Technologist course since the year 2018 and MD Radiation Oncology course since the year 2020. Our MD and the BSc Courses are affiliated with Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bengaluru. The MD course is recognised by the National Medical Commission (NMC), and the BSc course is recognised by the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB).
Our department is dedicated to shaping the next generation of Radiation Therapy Physicians and Technologists through a curriculum rooted in systematic learning and reinforced by intensive practical exposure. We believe that a true master of radiotherapy must not only understand the physics of the beam but also the humanity of the patient sitting beneath it.
We are equipped to deliver highly precise treatments such as Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT), Image Guided Radiotherapy (IGRT), Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT), Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT), Stereotactic Radiotherapy (SRT) and Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS). We also are equipped to treat patients with 2D Conventional, 3DCRT and Electron beam therapy when its essential.

Total Body Irradiation (TBI) is a specialized form of radiation therapy that involves treating the entire body with a uniform dose of radiation. It’s most commonly used as a "conditioning" treatment before a bone marrow transplant or stem cell transplant.Craniospinal Irradiation (CSI) is a technique where the Radiation is delivered to entire craniospinal access, for specific indications such as Medulloblastoma.

TSET is a highly complex treatment that involves delivering electron beam therapy to the entire skin surface of the body. This procedure requires stringent quality assurance by the Medical Physics team and meticulous customization for each patient. It is used in the treatment of cutaneous lymphoma (Ex: Mycosis Fungoides)
