Founded in 1966 by Dr. H. S. Subramanyam with a vision for comprehensive mental health care, the Department of Psychiatry has steadily evolved . Led by notable figures like Dr. Prakash Appaya, Dr. K Srinivasan and currently Dr. Johnson Praddep Ruben, the department has embraced modern medicine and grown in to a into a vibrant multidisciplinary centre. for over five decades, it has excelled in high quality clinical services, innovative teaching, advanced technology, and impactful research. It has been recognized as the best national UG & PG teaching department. 

Scope of services & Highlights:

We Provide a comprehensive range  of Psychiatric services encompassing adult, child and adolescent, geriatric, perinatal, addiction, and consultation-liaison psychiatry, supported by emergency care, ECT, biofeedback, psychological Assessment,  therapy, and rehabilitation. Special clinics deliver focused care for vulnerable groups, including geriatric patients, individuals with alcohol dependence (BIG Service), those with Suicide attempts (AMAS), and children with autism or eating disorder. ROSHNI offers recovery- oriented day- care rehabilitation, while MAANASI Provides flagship community psychiatric services at the Mugalur sub centre. The STAR Telepsychiatry  program supports Johnite doctors and religious sister in remote religions. COM-DEALL delivers multidisciplinary early - intervention for developmental delays  and autisum CARE ADD enables early identification and intervention for adolescents and young adults with Autism. with ICMR/ NIH funding and extensive publications, the department leads in psychiatric research.
