Overview

Anatomy

The Department of Nephrology, established in 1987, is one of Karnataka’s earliest super speciality units dedicated to kidney care. Over the years, it has evolved in tandem with advances in modern medicine, expanding its services to meet the growing needs of patients with acute and chronic kidney diseases. From its modest beginning with a small dialysis unit, the department has grown into a comprehensive centre offering hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, renal transplantation, and interventional nephrology. With a strong multidisciplinary team and patient-centred approach, the department continues to uphold excellence in delivering high-quality renal care.

Scope of Services and Department Highlights:

The Department of Nephrology provides comprehensive care across the full spectrum of kidney diseases, offering outpatient and inpatient services, acute kidney injury management, and timely nephrology interventions in the Emergency Department and ICU.

With facilities for maintenance hemodialysis, CAPD, and specialized transplant and access clinics, the department ensures continuity and uniformity of care. Interventional procedures, including renal biopsies and catheter placements, are performed in a newly launched Interventional Nephrology Suite equipped with a Digital C-arm—the second such advanced facility in Karnataka.

The department has also expanded its outreach through its official X handle @SJMCH_Nephro. Additionally, a patient-supported renal transplant fund and the Manna meal program reflect its commitment to compassionate, patient-centred care.

Overview on Dialysis:

The Department of Nephrology began its journey in allied health sciences with the Diploma in Dialysis in 1989, followed by the introduction of the Bachelor of Science in Renal Dialysis Technology (B.Sc.  RDT) in the year 2000. We were first to start B.Sc. Renal dialysis course in Karnataka. Our 1st batch of 5 students joined in year 2000. Now we have increased our seats to 20 students each year since 2016. We have dedicated team of Doctors, Postgraduates, Technologists and Nurses who work as team to give best services to society.

The Allied Health Sciences courses offered by St. John’s Medical College are affiliated to the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), Karnataka, Bengaluru.
