Medicolegal autopsies in private medical colleges in India: An urgent need
Abstract
The Forensic Medicine fraternity in India is in a conundrum. In many states of India, conducting medicolegal autopsies is limited to Government centers. The exponential increase in the number of autopsies conducted, clubbed with restrictions on the number of centers permitted to do the autopsies, has placed an unbearable burden on these Government centers. Furthermore, undergraduate medical students studying in private medical colleges lose the opportunities to observe and learn autopsies. Currently, there are 612 medical colleges teaching MBBS in India, of which 321 are managed by the Government and 291 are run by private/trust management. Through this article, the authors would like to highlight the issues faced due to such restricted permission to do medicolegal autopsies, with suggestions from High Court regarding the same.
