The Department came into existence in 1987, starting out with only 4 beds. First headed by Dr. Ashley D’Cruz and later by Dr. Kanishka Das, it currently has 29 beds and 8 beds for children who need closer monitoring (ITU).
The first pediatric liver transplants of south India were conducted here in the year 2000. It is also the first centre to be recognized by the RGUHS for a super specialty degree in pediatric surgery. Both Dr. D’Cruz and Dr. Das were instrumental in drafting the curriculum. Since 2014, there have been two recognized MCh seats permitted. Thus far, more than 20 residents have qualified from the department with many securing university ranks. Almost all of them are now associated with various institutions and corporate sectors where they continue to practice quality pediatric surgery and train the younger generations.
The Department currently has five permanent faculty in various cadres Professor (1), Associate professors (2), Assistant professors (2) along with Senior residents. All the faculty are trained from reputed National Institutes and have long years of experience. They are adept with the recent guidelines of treatment and are dedicated towards the care of sick children. They are also actively involved in teaching, research and publications
The Department has a recognition in the National forum for rendering high quality up to date care for pediatric surgical children and Academic excellence.
It has been the referral center for children with Hirschsprung’s Disease for the diagnostic precision offered in collaboration with the Department of Pathology. Multidisciplinary and comprehensive care is rendered for patients with Complex Urological disorders, Congenital malformations, Hydrocephalus-Spina Bifida, Disorders of sex differentiation and Pediatric tumors. This has been the only Institute where Pediatric Renal Transplantation has been primarily managed by the Pediatric Surgery Team.
The Department is nearing 35 years of its existence and strives to render eminent care and cure to Children with surgical disorders along with dissemination of high-quality Academics to aspiring students
