The Department of Paediatric Hematology Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplant is one of the first units in India to be set up in an academic teaching hospital for the care of children with blood diseases and cancer. The children cared for include various types of anaemia and haemoglobin disorders, a plastic anaemia, bleeding disorders, platelet disorders, acute and chronic leukemia and lympho-proliferative disorders. Solid tumours cared for include sarcomas (bone and muscle tumours), kidney tumours, liver tumours and other rare tumours.
We see approximately 1000 new patients and 15,000 consults each year. These include over 100 children with new cancer diagnosis every year, and over 400 children on follow up after cancer treatment. We treat 75-80 paediatric patients each year with new diagnosis of bleeding disorders (ITP, haemophilia, rare bleeding disorders), with over 500 such patients on follow up. We have specifically allotted 30 beds in an exclusive Paediatric Haematology- Oncology general ward for the care of admitted patients. These patient areas are equipped with procedure rooms and designated chemotherapy preparation area.
