Overview

Anatomy

 

  • The department was established in 1966 at St. Martha’s Hospital, Bangalore which was the teaching hospital for students of St. Johns Medical College. Between 1980 and 1983 all units from St. Martha’s Hospital were shifted to St. John’s Medical College Hospital, which then onwards has been the teaching Hospital for students of St. John’s Medical College. 
  • The Department of General Surgery is one of the major service and teaching departments in the institution. The department currently has 18 faculty, 5 senior residents and 15 post graduates and interns. The departments has 4 units with and additional Division of vascular surgery.  Over the years the department has grown in terms of number of faculty, range of expertise and services available and now offers varies procedures such as advanced minimal access surgery. Hepatobiliary, vascular, colorectal, GI and transplant surgery. In additional the department caters to a significant proportion of emergencies seen at the Hospital, these include patients with acute surgical problems and poly trauma patients. All faculty are well trained in their areas of work and are committed to provide the best for patients at all times. 
  • The department conducts an annual postgraduate continuing surgical education programme (CSEP) which was started in the year 2002. It includes the Professor. A F.A Mascarenhas Memorial oration, Dr. Sr. Nirmala Memorial Surgical Quiz and a “hands on” surgical skills workshop along with lectures, videos and case discussions. The department also conducts a prize examination for final year undergraduate students annually. In addition Dr. Kilpadi has instituted a prize for the best out going post graduate students in each batch from the year 2014. 
  • The department has a well appointed office, class room with audio – visual teaching aids, library, skills laboratory, lounge for staff, duty rooms for staff and residents , and a stoma clinic staffed by Ms. Soniya Varghese who is a trained and experiences enterostomal therapist. Mrs. Diana is the LDC Grade I staff in the department. 
  • The regular academic programme include lectures, bedside clinics and tutorials for undergraduates and seminars, Journals clubs, operative surgery discussions, clinical case discussions, work audit including mortality reviews for post graduates. We also have interdepartmental meeting with Radiology, Pathology and other specialities. Regular classes are held for interns. A skills Lab is available to trains students and interns in acquiring practical skills. 
  • Staffs are members of several intramural committees such as the Ombudsman committee the Hospital infection control committee, the pharmacy committee, and many other committees. Some Senior faculty are members of selection committees for postgraduates and faculty in other universities. They are also on the board of studies at various universities and National Board inspectors and examiners. Senior faculty members are also examiners at the undergraduates and postgraduates levels in many universities. 
  • The department has conducted national conferences in the past, the latest being “Traumasicon” (National Conference of Indian Association of Trauma and Critical care) in June 2016. The department participates actively in rural outreach programmes in association with the department of community Health currently at Mugalur and Brigade Meadows, Kanakapura 
  • The department gets many overseas students as exchange students throughout the year and trains interns and other junior doctors from several other institutions
