Established in 1963, the Department of Internal Medicine has developed into a distinguished center of clinical excellence, academic advancement, and research innovation, situated on the 3rd-floor campus extension. Under the exemplary leadership of successive heads—Drs. GN Reddy, AVM Krishnamurti, AN Balasundaram, Prem Pais, GD Ravindran, KS Chandramouli, Cecil Ross, Jyothi Idiculla, and the present Head, Dr. Ratnamala Choudhury—the department has sustained a legacy of distinction. The formation of sub-specialties including Endocrinology (2007), Critical Care and Pulmonology (2010), Immunology (2011), Family Medicine (2020), Hematology (2022), and Infectious Diseases Division (2025) underscores its progressive vision and enduring academic prominence.
The Medicine Department has the largest OPD which is located in the ground floor of the main building (OPD Block) of the hospital. Consultants have postgraduate qualification in Internal Medicine (MD/DNB).

All infectious diseases are evaluated and treated in the Medicine Department. The ART Centre (Open from 8:30 am to 5 pm Monday – Saturday) is run by the nodal officer from the Department of Medicine in collaboration with NACO. It provides counseling, consultation and free treatment of HIV positive patients
